Massat: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Massat, the Grotte ornée paléolithique at the Rocher de Ker is a decorated cave from the Upper Paleolithic with rock engravings. By decree of 20 November 1974, it was classified as a historic monument.

Culture and History

The Église de la Nativité-de-la-Vierge was rebuilt around 1700 on the site of an older Romanesque church and completed in 1725. Its octagonal bell tower is believed to date from the 15th century. The Arac Valley, which is associated with Massat, also has a long industrial history.

Local Life

Massat's weekly market takes place on Thursdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pouech de Massat. During the summer season, there are also two large evening markets, one in July and one in August. Arts and crafts as well as local and farm-produced goods take centre stage there; concerts, children's entertainment, refreshments, barbecues and an on-site drinks bar are also available.

Nature

The mountain forests of Massat include beech, fir, oak and centuries-old chestnut trees and invite visitors to observe the mountain forest's flora and fauna. The high-altitude meadows are maintained as open landscapes with short grass by numerous herds.

La Promenade du Ker is a two-hour route covering 6.3 kilometres with 181 metres of elevation gain.

Geographical Setting

In the area surrounding Massat, the Étang de Lers offers year-round opportunities for orienteering, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fishing and hiking, as well as favourable conditions for paragliding. The Massat tourist office provides information about these and other outdoor activities.
