Nature and Water
The Roc des Caujous extends across Fougax-et-Barrineuf and Bélesta and towers more than 300 m above the upper Hers valley. Water is a defining feature of Fougax-et-Barrineuf and can be seen in fountains, washhouses, springs, streams and torrents.

History and Culture
Fougax-et-Barrineuf is the birthplace of Adelin Moulis, a poet, folklorist and committed defender of the Occitan language.
The Church of Saint Michael in Fougax has been documented since 1334 and became the parish church around the beginning of the 18th century. It has a tower shape that is atypical for the region and uses a combination of stone and brick, including on the tower. The Church of Saint Joseph in Barrineuf was built between 1657 and 1660.
The Moulin à eau de l’Espine is a functioning watermill dating from the 18th century. There, visitors can follow the process of turning grain into flour.
Gorges and Trails
The Gorges de la Frau form a canyon carved by the Hers over a length of 3 km into the Montagne de la Frau, with rock faces 300 to 400 m high. In the past, the Gorges de la Frau were one of the few crossings between Ariège and Aude and served as a hiding place for smugglers.
A hiking route through the Gorges de la Frau begins in Fougax-et-Barrineuf and leads through the gorge to the municipality of Comus in the Aude department. The hiking route through the Gorges de la Frau is a 7.6 km round trip.
The Gorges de la Frau can be reached from Pélail after a 2 km walk. There is a car park at the end of the access road to the Gorges de la Frau.
The ruins of the former hamlet of Basqui are still visible along the hiking route through the Gorges de la Frau. Lily engravings made by royal foresters around 400 years ago can still be seen along the hiking route through the Gorges de la Frau.
