Culture and History
Castex’s present-day church was built and consecrated in 1899. Inside, there is a carved wooden Christ dating from the 14th century.
Castex was formerly a fortified settlement and belonged to the castellanry of Carla. Remains of the fortification walls have been preserved on the ridges where the village is located; from there, there are views of the Pyrenees.
The vibrant culture includes the Los Désentutats d’Arièjo folk group. It performs dances from Ariège and other regions in traditional dress and wooden clogs, also performs at church concerts and Bal trad events, and sings Pyrenean songs in French and Occitan.
Landscape and Trails
Castex is mainly accessed from Daumazan-sur-Arize via the RD 19. The RD 19 connects the valleys of the Lèze and the Arize.
The Le Barraca par Castex hiking trail connects ridge paths with panoramic views of the Pyrenean mountain range and the surrounding valley.
Local Specialty
The Figue Castex is a Mediterranean fig with smooth, thin skin. When ripe, it is pale yellow with violet tones and has very light, almost pink flesh.
Fig plants of the Figue Castex variety are available from Les Martres in Castex. The municipality of Castex gave the Figue Castex fig variety its name.
