Carla-Bayle: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Carla-Bayle combines a medieval bastide, public art, museums and a lake at the foot of the historic site. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment for a stay in Carla-Bayle can include this wish in their travel planning alongside visits to the town’s sights.

Culture and History

The Citadelle du Carla-Bayle is a medieval bastide on a rocky promontory. Visitors can walk along the Remparts and see picturesque lanes, half-timbered houses and colourful façades. From the Citadelle du Carla-Bayle, a 360-degree panorama extends as far as the Pyrenees.

The religious and intellectual history of the town is also visible. The Temple has been listed as a historic monument since 1991. Since 2014, the Église has housed a Stations of the Cross created with works by artists from the town; the monumental frescoes by Tristan Rà, Clermonde and Shaka were created in 2019.

At the Maison Pierre Bayle, visitors can trace Pierre Bayle’s life from his childhood in Carla-Bayle to his exile in Rotterdam. The Musée Pierre Bayle is located in the philosopher’s birthplace and provides insights into 17th-century history and the philosophy of the Enlightenment.

Art in the Town

The sculpture trail includes Nadine Debay’s “Déesse Mère Prototypique”, made of resin in 2010, Suzy Lelièvre’s “Échelle”, made of anodised steel in 2008, and Olivier Ledoux’s “Le Couple”, made of cedar, chestnut and sequoia wood in 2012.

Since 2002, the Musée Les Amoureux d’Angélique has exhibited outsider art, naïve art and folk art by self-taught, non-professional artists. The galleries in Carla-Bayle display painting, sculpture, photography and contemporary art.

Lake and Trails

Lac du Carla-Bayle is an 11-hectare lake at the foot of the bastide. A path approximately 2 kilometres long leads around the lake and can be used for walking all year round. The Tour du Lac du Carla-Bayle follows the shore; visitors can watch birds there and regularly hear frogs.

For a longer hike, La Carlanaise par Cassagne is available as a 15-kilometre circular route starting in Carla-Bayle. The route begins and ends at the Gymnase-Salle Polyvalente du Carla-Bayle.
