Fraize: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Nature

The hiking trails in Fraize cover around 32 kilometres of circular and point-to-point routes. The Parcours De Santé at Col des Journaux is 2,000 metres long and can be used by schools, clubs, individuals and families for leisure and recreational purposes.

The Voie verte de la Haute Meurthe is a 9-kilometre former railway line between Saint-Léonard and Plainfaing. La Roche des Fées is a jumble of rocks on a wooded hilltop, surrounded by coniferous woodland on scree and dry peatland.

A forest walk to the Chapelle du Suisse starts at the tourist office and offers views of the Meurthe, the Petite Meurthe and the slopes of Anould. The Chapelle du Suisse was built in 1865. It is freely accessible via signposted paths; visits are limited to the exterior areas.

The Sentier des murs de mémoire follows restored and enhanced walls and offers a view of the town of Fraize.

Culture and History

The Maison Wald is an 18th-century civic house. For almost two centuries, it housed a pharmacy run by a lineage of surgeons and herbalists.

The Church of Saint Blaise was built in 1783 after the previous church was destroyed by fire during the night of 6 February 1782. It contains several objects listed in the inventory of historic monuments, including 19 stained-glass windows created by Max Ingrand and installed in 1949 and 1950.

The remains of Fraize’s textile past have been preserved. These include the 63-metre-high chimney of the Avelines, built in 1891 and listed as a historic monument in 2015.

The Carré Militaire contains 318 graves, mostly of French soldiers, as well as several Muslim soldiers and one English soldier. They died in the fighting at Col des Journaux, in Mandray, at the Cols du Bonhomme or at Lushpach.

The Classe musée la Costelle recreates, with period furniture, a classroom as it might have looked from around the 1940s to the 1960s. It offers guided tours on request and educational visits.

The Croix du Mazeville Ouest is a monolithic monument dating from 1711. The Croix du Belrepaire Sud is a stone wayside cross with a monolithic shaft; the year 1812 is inscribed on its base.

Local Attractions

The Verger Patrimonial in Fraize also serves an educational purpose for schools and tourists. It was created to preserve old varieties of apples, pears and plums from the canton of Fraize and the surrounding region.

La Costelle organises training days, tours and conferences about the Verger Patrimonial and how it operates.

The Fraize tourist office provides visitor information, a shop selling regional products and a ticket service. Boucherie Toussaint in Fraize offers homemade charcuterie and smoked specialities from the Vosges.
