Rahling’s architectural heritage is characteristic of the Lorraine plateau sector. The village’s historic buildings bring together different periods and religious influences.
Culture and History
The parish church of Saint-Christophe in Rahling was rebuilt in the late second quarter of the 18th century and consecrated in 1748. At Rahling Castle, the stair tower stands on the front façade; it was built in 1620.
Saint-Christophe Church also preserves the base of the bell tower of a church rebuilt in 1595. Its painted ceiling is signed by M. Kling and dated 1935. Rahling Church also contains a painting entitled “la Crucifixion”.
Rahling Castle was both classified as a historic monument and listed as a historic monument on 29 April 1994. It preserves the rear and side façades of an original structure thought to date from the 14th century; these were fitted with new openings in the 15th and 16th centuries.
The Saint-Wendelin Chapel in Rahling, also known as the Weiher Chapel or Weiher Church, was rebuilt in the 18th century and is the last surviving evidence of the vanished village of Weiher.
Religious Heritage
The ensemble of three crowns in Altkirch in Rahling is associated with pilgrimages to Saint Hubert on 3 November. Believers with headaches, or seeking to prevent them, placed these crowns on their heads.
The Chapelle Saint-Hubert in the former hamlet of Oldingen between Bining and Rahling was rebuilt from 1841 under Abbé Pierre Faltz and consecrated in 1855.
