Château-Salins: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The salt springs of Château-Salins were discovered at the beginning of the 16th century and exploited until 1826.

Culture

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Château-Salins is a neo-Gothic church built between 1868 and 1893. It has an 18th-century organ from the Abbaye des Prémontrés de Salival, which was fully restored in 1995.

To protect the salt springs, the Lorraine Duke Raoul had a fortified castle built in Château-Salins in 1327. The ducal fortress east of today's Place des Salines remained largely intact until the beginning of the 19th century. The Bishops of Metz also had a second castle called Beaurepaire built a short distance away.

The Château-Salins saltworks, located in the town centre, cannot be visited. More modern salt extraction south of Château-Salins resumed in 1894 and was finally discontinued in 1940.

Trails and Leisure

The “Liaison Château-Salins - zone de loisirs” footpath connects the circular trails “Entre les Deux Seilles” and “Entre Vergers et Forêts” and runs partly along the Petite Seille.

The Aux Salines site was transformed into an outdoor recreational area. Around the landscaped pond, it offers numerous leisure activities, including mountain biking, tennis and walks.

The “Entre vergers et forêts” circular hike is classified as easy and passes between the state forest and centuries-old orchards.

More than 20 kilometres of marked hiking trails have been designated in Château-Salins; the starting point is south of the town at the Gîte d'étape.

Market

The Château-Salins weekly market takes place on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Place de la Saline. Vendors include, among others, a butcher, a greengrocer, a honey seller, a poultry vendor and a rotisserie.

Other destinations: Saint-Avold, Augny, Haut-Clocher, Vaux, Baerenthal, Longeville-Lès-Metz, Contz-Les-Bains, Sainte-Barbe.
