Culture

The tower of Sainte-Agathe Church is the oldest monument in Longuyon. The current building dates back to at least the end of the 13th century. The church can be visited daily on request, individually or in a group; a 20-minute audio tour is available in French, English or German.

The history of the town also includes the chapel of the former college of the Christian Brothers, which was built in 1887. Le wagon is a former SNCF railway carriage and houses the Longuyonnais tourist office. The Grotte de la Vierge was built in 1900 by final-year students of the institution of the Christian Brothers and is reminiscent of the Grotto of Lourdes.

On the slope and along the path to the Grotte de la Vierge stands the Glacière des Frères, which has remained intact. The 6.50 m-deep and 4 m-wide natural refrigerator was built in the 1890s by the Brothers of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de La Salle to store the boarding school’s supplies.

History

Longuyon railway station was established in 1854; the Longuyon–Longwy railway line was opened in the same year. The Dorlon blast furnace, dating from 1692, included a stamping mill that crushed slag to recover iron.

The Mémorial du Vieux Pré commemorates French and German soldiers who fell in the Battle of Longuyon-Noërs on 23 and 24 August 1914. The German military cemetery in Longuyon is the final resting place of 1,756 soldiers from the First World War, including 1,748 Germans and 8 Frenchmen; some of them died in the Battle of Longuyon-Noërs on 24 August 1914. The French military cemetery contains 60 individual graves of French soldiers and a monument commemorating those killed in the fighting on 23 August 1914.

Nature

Outside the town, on the edge of the forest, lies the Étang de Profonde Fontaine. It is a leisure centre with numerous bird species and other animals. Hiking trails start from the leisure centre at the Étang de Profonde Fontaine.

Hiking

The Sentier de Revémont is an 11 km-long hiking trail marked with a green ring, with a stated walking time of 3 hours. There is a car park at the Profonde Fontaine site in Longuyon.
