Mars-La-Tour: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

History and Remembrance

The Saint-Martin Memorial Church in Mars-la-Tour can be visited by prior appointment. The Monument aux morts is a work by Bogino and commemorates the French soldiers who died for their homeland on 16 and 18 August 1870. The bronze statue on the monument depicts France crowning a dying soldier.

Buildings

The Collégiale de Chanoines de L'Annonciation was built from 1500 to 1502. The north façade, the arch of the former west portal and significant remains of the former southern side aisle have survived. At the château in Mars-la-Tour, sections of the surrounding wall remain in the north, east and south.

The Saint-Martin Church has 16 stained-glass windows. Their motifs include Marshal Foch, Joan of Arc and scenes from the life of Saint Martin.

Routes and Nature

The Circuit de mémoire de la guerre de 1870 partly follows a railway line and passes between ponds. There is a picnic area there, as well as information boards about the local flora and fauna.

The “10 des bornes frontières” route follows the former Franco-German border. Border stones dating from 1871 have been preserved along the route. The route also passes a Natura 2000 site dedicated to protecting the Montagu’s harrier.
