History and landscape
The Tour de Sermur is the only surviving tower of a feudal fortress that was destroyed at the beginning of the Hundred Years’ War. In 1797, Jean-Baptiste Joseph Delambre used the Tour de Sermur as a reference point when surveying the meridian arc from Dunkirk to Barcelona. The area around the Tour de Sermur offers a sweeping panorama, particularly to the east towards the Puy de Dôme and to the south towards the Plateau de La Courtine.

Townscape and architectural heritage
Sermur is a stone village that showcases the craftsmanship of Creuse’s stonemasons. Old stone houses line the narrow streets; fountains, washhouses, a bread oven and ruiniform rocks characterise the typical hamlets.
The Église Saint-Hilaire was rebuilt between 1900 and 1902 thanks to a donation from the Duvert family. Its cruciform floor plan ends in a semicircular apse.

The Fontaine Saint-Roch is crowned by a monolithic Latin cross made of granite; a procession takes place there every year on the first Sunday after 15 August. The landscape garden of Sermur was created on the foundations of a former barn.
