History
The Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Vigeois has been classified as a historic monument since 12 July 1886; its earliest documented mention dates back to 572. For some travellers, renting a holiday apartment in Vigeois is part of the desired setting for their stay.
The Vieux-Pont, also known as the Pont des Anglais, has been classified as a historic monument since 14 November 1969. It was built before the end of the 14th century on the site of a former ford across the Vézère and was restored in 2004 and 2005.
Nature and Trails
Lac de Pontcharal is a 15.2-hectare recreational lake located 3 km from the centre of Vigeois. The Vigeois yew tree is considered to be 1,400 years old. Beneath its branches is a small “inner garden” where visitors can observe young green shoots, the red bark and small animals.
At Lac de Pontcharal, there is an easy 2.7 km circular trail with an average duration of 42 minutes. The sixth stage of the GR®46 begins in Vigeois and leads from there to Estivaux; it is a difficult 14 km hike that runs parallel to the Vézère Valley through fields and protected forests.
Local Tradition
The Association de la Pomme et le Boudin organises the “Fête de la pomme et du boudin” festival in Vigeois on All Saints’ Day. Boudin aux châtaignes, a speciality of Corrèze, is given special prominence every year on 1 November.
