Treignac lies in a bend of the Vézère between the Massif des Monédières and the Plateau de Millevaches. The town is a gateway to the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin. The regional natural setting also includes the Natura 2000 protected area “Gorges de la Vézère autour de Treignac”, which is managed by the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches.

Culture and history
Treignac bears the “Petite Cité de Caractère®” label. Its historic buildings include the Vieux Pont over the Vézère, dating from the 13th century, and Treignac’s 12th-century grain hall. A walking tour through the historic town is marked at the town’s monuments with scallop shells. The “Belvédère” tower offers panoramic views of Treignac’s old town; the main sights are also covered by Wivisites’ free audio guide.
The Église Notre Dame des Bans was rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1471. Its altar and stained-glass windows were created in 1959 by local artists Marcel Petit and Camille Fleury, respectively. The Maison Lachaud Sangnier is located on the Way of St. James and formerly served as a pilgrims’ hostel.
Of the three medieval gates of the fortified town of Treignac, the Porte Chabirande is the only one that remains. The Chapelle Notre Dame de la Paix has a twisted bell tower, one of the twisted towers found in Europe. The Chapelle des Pénitents was built between 1646 and 1661 for the Confrérie des Pénitents Blancs, founded in 1637, and is now used as a venue for cultural and artistic encounters.
Water and activities
Lac des Bariousses is a 99-hectare lake in a hollow of the Vézère. Its shores alternate between meadows, wooded areas and rock faces. At this lake, Station Sports Nature Vézère-Monédières rents out canoes and kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats with slides. The station also offers half-day canoe trips on the Vézère and mountain biking activities.
Free fishing without a fishing licence is permitted at the Etang du Portail in Treignac. Only one rod may be used per person.
Local character
Terra Aventura offers a playful treasure hunt for families, allowing them to discover Treignac’s cultural heritage. Treignac is also known for its natural mineral water, “l’Eau de Treignac”, which can be found, among other places, on the tables of the Élysée Palace.
