Culture and history
The Église Saint-Augustin in the municipality of Saint-Augustin has been listed as a historic monument since 25 September 1929. The small rural building has a rectangular single-nave layout dating from the early 13th century. Three rib-vaulted chapels were added in the 14th century, and the portal beneath the bell tower was created in the 15th century. The wooden vault of the nave preserves an unusual cambric from the late 15th century, imitating the ribs of a stone vault.
The first Église Saint-Augustin was built around the 11th century on the site of a hermitage of Augustinian monks. The Château de Beyssac is also part of the history of the municipality: it was destroyed during the fire of the Monédières and subsequently rebuilt by the La Jaurie family.
Near Les Boiroux, a single burial grave dating from the second half of the 1st century BC was discovered during ploughing in 1992. The grave goods from this archaeological discovery are displayed at the Musée du Cloître in Tulle. A small menhir in a meadow southwest of Chauzeix commemorates human presence in this area during the Megalithic period.
The Étang de Ganezande formerly belonged to the Seigneur of Beyssac. At La Serbe de Chauzeix, there is a former watering place that served as a drinking trough for livestock and a wash place for local residents; a cross stands beside it. At every crossroads and village entrance in the municipality of Saint-Augustin, there was a stone or wooden cross.
