Nature
The Tourbière du Longeyroux is a 250-hectare peat bog of European biological interest and extends across Saint-Merd-les-Oussines, Meymac and Chavanac. Its numerous small streams form the source of the Vézère. Among other species, the peat bog is home to lapwings, meadow pipits, whinchats, dragonflies and butterflies associated with peat bog habitats.
Trails
The interactive walking trail Au coeur du Plateau is approximately two kilometres long and lies in the heart of the Plateau de Millevaches. It presents the landscapes of the Plateau de Millevaches, peat bogs and wetlands, small architectural heritage, fauna and flora, as well as woodland.
The interpretive Linaigrettes trail at the Tourbière du Longeyroux is easy, approximately 0.9 kilometres long and takes around 30 minutes. Information panels explain the formation of peat and the fauna and flora of the bog; the trail also offers views of the Tourbière du Longeyroux and the surrounding puys.
The Bruyères trail begins at a car park above the bog on the D109; it can be accessed via Chavanac, Saint-Merd-les-Oussines or Meymac. A 100-metre detour leads into the bog to see the Cent Pierres.
The hike from the Site des Cars to the Tourbière du Longeyroux is challenging, 16 kilometres long, takes four and a half hours and has 349 metres of ascent.
Culture and history
The parish church of Saint-Médard in Saint-Merd-les-Oussines is a 14th- or 15th-century building, was restored after a fire in 1838, features granite and dressed stone, and contains a remarkable medieval tomb.
The Gallo-Roman remains at Les Cars were classified as a historic monument in 1935. The Site des Cars is associated with Saint-Merd-les-Oussines and Pérols-sur-Vézère and includes a villa and two funerary temples whose history dates back almost 2,000 years.
The section mill at Les Maisons was remarkably restored by the municipality.
