At the Belvédère des Gregeolles in Roche-le-Peyroux, the viewpoint overlooks the confluence of the Diège and Dordogne rivers. It faces the Saint-Nazaire site on the opposite bank of the Diège and offers a downstream view of the Barrage de Marèges reservoir.
Nature and Trails
The long-distance hiking trail “La Dordogne de Villages en Barrages” passes through Roche-le-Peyroux. Behind the Saint-Pardoux church, a picnic area offers a view of the Sancy Massif.
Smile Kayak offers its customers an educational trail with a bird-of-prey observation point. In the Haute Dordogne gorges, Smile Kayak offers canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating. The activities also include an “adventure day” with a barbecue by the water.
Culture and History
Next to the entrance of the Saint-Pardoux church is a carved stone bearing the inscription “SIGIG”, whose meaning is unknown. The wayside crosses in the municipality served as protective symbols, landmarks and markers for crossroads.
The village of Val Beneyte was built for the workers during the construction of the Centrale de Val Beneyte. During a pilgrimage organised in honour of the saint, the inhabitants of Roche gathered at the Belvédère de la confluence, while those from Cantal gathered at the edge of the plateau. Three groups sang simultaneously, and the echoes resounded through the valley.
Local Life
From April to September, La Bêle Ovine at the Les Chaumettes farm invites visitors to sample sheep’s milk cheese, curd cheese and yoghurt on Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon and on Fridays from 6 p.m. The pastures of Haras du Peyroux offer visitors the chance to see horses and foals.
