Culture and History

The parish church of Saint-Christophe in Maussac dates back to the 12th century and features a polygonal chancel, a Limousin portal and a vestibule tower with a bell chamber.

The Maussac coal mine operated until it closed in 1924. It was closed because the last concession-holding company became insolvent.

The “Au charbon!” circular trail illustrates the former boom of coal mining in Maussac by contrasting traditional architecture with mining and administrative facilities. It is a yellow-marked cultural circular trail whose paths are included in the PDIPR. The difficult circular hiking trail is 15.8 kilometres long, takes around four hours and starts at Maussac Gare station.

The historic site of Abbaye Saint-André and the Prieuré du Jassonneix monastery are located in the area around Maussac.

The Soudeillette Valley is designated as a ZNIEFF (natural area of ecological, faunal and floristic interest).

In the wider region around Maussac are Château de la Gâne, the ruins of Les Cars, and the mountains of Puy Charrin, Puy de Gussange and Puy de Verières.

Regional Products

Distillerie Rougerie & Fils is open to the public all year round and offers free and guided tours with tasting. Individual visits are possible daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; groups by reservation. Distillerie Rougerie & Fils was founded by Benoît Rougerie in 1800 and produces liqueurs in Maussac made from fruit and wild berries from the region.
