Culture and History

The Église Saint-Pierre is classified as a historic monument. At the same time, it is a small building dating from the late 12th century that was remodelled particularly in the 13th and 16th centuries. The history of the village also includes the Fontaine Saint-Pierre in Eyrein, which has been flowing into its granite basin since 1893.

The village of La Jugie on the road to Sédières and Clergoux forms a high-quality architectural ensemble. Guillemette de Rogier, the sister of Pope Clement VI, lived in La Jugie with her husband Jacques de La Jugie. At the exit of La Jugie, at the junction with the road to Chambon, stands the Croix des lépreux: a 15th-century flower-shaped cross made of white granulite, with six figures including Christ and the Virgin Mary.

Eyrein's sacred heritage also includes a protected, two-tiered tabernacle made of carved and gilded walnut wood dating from the 17th century. It was restored in 1961 and in August 2016.

Nature and Landscape

Le Puy de la Tour in Eyrein reaches an elevation of 614 metres. From its summit, which has an orientation table, it offers a 360-degree panorama.

The Étang de Chabrière in Eyrein is listed as a protected area covering 63 hectares; the listing was made by ministerial decree dated 5 December 1944. The Étang de Chabrière is visible from the road but remains private and inaccessible.

A path on the outskirts of Eyrein leads through dense oak and chestnut woodland to the granite Rocher de la Rissière, which lies about 400 metres from the village. Visitors can reach the summit of the Rocher de la Rissière via steps carved directly into the rock. The Rocher de la Rissière has been classified as a protected natural site since 23 November 1933.

Hiking and Trails

An easy 5-kilometre hike there and back leads to the summit of Le Puy de la Tour. The route to the Étang de la Chèze is an easy 10.8-kilometre hike lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes. It starts in the centre of Eyrein at the car park on Place de la mairie and leads through beech, coniferous and birch forests.
