Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Étienne in Cornil is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. It was built from 1105 onwards by the de Monceau family and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1927. Its architectural features include a transept with apsidioles, a square bell tower set on a dome, and a polygonal apse with decorated colonnettes. The church can be visited freely.

Opposite the Church of Saint-Étienne, the ruins of the castle tower stand on the medieval La Chapoulie site. Its distinctive silhouette also appears on Route 1 of the “Chemins des 3 Corrèzes”, which starts in Cornil and showcases the Romanesque church and the castle tower.

Nature

During a walk around Cornil, the Gane waterfall, also known as Cascade de Pomperi, can be reached in a protected natural landscape. The Coiroux nature trail includes wetlands and bodies of water, forests managed by the ONF, and the Golf du Coiroux.

The Cornil arboretum is located on Chemin des Roudies above the town centre. It forms part of the 14-kilometre “Les Balcons de la Corrèze” hiking trail and offers a botanical experience among woodland and meadows, with selected trees and shrubs illustrating the vegetation of the Corrèze.

Hiking and Circular Trails

The “Des rives de la Corrèze aux villages perchés” hiking trail is a challenging 15-kilometre circular route for hiking and mountain biking. It leads from the area below the church and tower down to the Corrèze gorges. Along the way, it passes waterfalls, hilltop villages and small heritage features such as ovens, a washhouse and wells.

Bodies of Water and Viewpoints

The Cascade de Rabès is located in Rabès in Cornil and is classified as a body of water as well as a rock, cliff or gorge formation. Cornil also has the “Panorama” viewpoint with an orientation table.

The Cascade de la Brauze is a natural slide approximately 30 metres high in dense woodland. The access route begins near a sewage treatment plant, around 600 metres from the town centre, and follows the stream along a wooden walkway. The Cascade de Cornil lies hidden in the hills and is visited by hikers.
