Culture

Above a bend in the Agly River, the Notre-Dame-de-Pène hermitage stands on a rocky ridge. The sanctuary was built on the site of an old castle first mentioned in the 11th century; 51 steps lead to the chapel. The hermitage is partially protected as a historic monument, and its chapel and outbuildings were placed under protection by an order dated 1 June 1992.

The Art Deco town hall of Cases-de-Pène dates from 1934 and is considered the second reinforced-concrete building in the Pyrénées-Orientales department.

Nature

The Agly passes through the Cases-de-Pène gorge into the Roussillon plain. The summit of la Crèssa is located near Cases-de-Pène; the summit of Serrat d'en Bugader is also nearby. The summit of Serrat de la Nereda and the Força Réal mountain are also located in the vicinity of Cases-de-Pène.

Hiking

The hike to the Notre-Dame-de-Pène hermitage starts in Cases-de-Pène, is an easy circular route of around 7 km and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. It passes through a wild limestone valley characterised by garrigue and rocky slabs.

The hike to the Torre del Far can start at the car park of the cooperative winery in Cases-de-Pène, takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, and leads to the Torre del Far, a former signal tower overlooking the Roussillon plain.

Château de Péna is a cooperative winery in Roussillon founded in Cases-de-Pène in 1942. Around 30 winegrowers work together there on 450 hectares of vineyards on black schist and marl.
