In the city centre, the Circuit du Patrimoine is a walking tour dedicated to discovering Mende’s cultural heritage and includes 28 information stations. At the same time, Mende is one of the gateways to the “Cévennes, gorges & grands Causses” area, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site as cultural and natural heritage since 2011.

Culture

The “La résistance à Mende” remembrance trail consists of 17 panels. They are located at sites directly connected to events and people of the Resistance. The Chapelle Saint-Dominique is the surviving part of the former Carmelite monastery that once extended across this neighbourhood.

The Musée du Gévaudan has interactive areas on the ground floor for discovering the region in a playful way. In the Chapelle des Pénitents, paintings from the 17th century became visible when the altarpiece was moved.

The Notre-Dame & Saint-Privat de Mende Cathedral was begun in 1368 on the initiative of Pope Urban V and consecrated in 1467. It houses a Black Madonna from the 12th century; Aubusson tapestries from the 18th century can also be seen there. Mende’s historic centre has around 60 documented historic gateways dating from the 15th to the 19th century.

Nature

The Mende Arboretum is a green walking route in the heart of the city. The Ermitage Saint-Privat offers views of Mende and the surrounding landscape.

The Croix du Mont-Mimat offers panoramic views over Mende and has an observation panel.

Trails and Pilgrimage

The Ermitage Saint-Privat can be reached on foot from the Place du Foirail in Mende via the Chemin de croix. The Chemin de croix connects the Place du Foirail with the Ermitage and is used by walkers. It has 14 renovated stations and viewpoints overlooking Mende.

A diocesan pilgrimage takes place at the Ermitage Saint-Privat every year. Individual guided tours of the Notre-Dame & Saint-Privat de Mende Cathedral are offered from June to September and during school holidays; outside these periods, they are available by prior reservation.

Activities

The Via Ferrata de Mende offers routes for all levels, from beginners to experienced climbers. The Causse de Mende offers family-friendly trails. There are also more challenging routes for mountain bikes, electrically assisted mountain bikes and electric scooters.
