La Bastide-Puylaurent is located near the sources of the Allier. Originally, the village was an inn and a place set up as a rest stop on the Chemin de la Régordane.

Culture and History
The Chemin de Régordane runs through La Bastide-Puylaurent along a north–south axis. The church of Puylaurent was listed as a historic monument by decree of 24 June 1976.
In the parish church of Saint-Laurent in Puylaurent, the walls of the nave may date from the 12th century. The nave has a groined barrel vault possibly dating from the 14th century; a side chapel was added on the southern side in the 17th century.
The Notre-Dame des Neiges monastery is located in the immediate vicinity of La Bastide-Puylaurent. The surrounding area also contains the ruins of Château de Luc, the Monument aux morts de Luc war memorial, and the historic site of Abbaye de Mercoire.

The surroundings of La Bastide-Puylaurent include several prominent elevations: the Moure de la Gardille mountain, the Serre de la Pialade mountain, the Montagne du Goulet, and the Suc du Chapelas mountain.
