Nature

The Sentier de Barre-des-Cévennes is a very easy 3.6 km circular trail. The walking time is two hours, with 181 m of ascent and 184 m of descent. The trail leads from the lanes of the old village to remarkable panoramic views.

Castelas is an erosion-shaped butte formed from the former limestone cover that was separated from the Grands Causses. Castelas was inhabited around 2500 BC. On the remaining rocks are around ten rectangular depressions that presumably supported the base of a wooden signal tower.

Culture and History

The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Barre-des-Cévennes is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century. Since 1931, Notre-Dame de l’Assomption has been protected as a historic monument.
