Culture

Among the town’s defining buildings is the Château de Fesq: its façades and roofs, as well as the garden fountain, have been listed as historic monuments since June 25, 1964. The interior of the Château de Fesq cannot be visited. North of the historic center, Vic-le-Fesq also has a temple.

Saint-Jean-de-Vic is a Romanesque church and today an ecumenical place where Catholic and Protestant ceremonies take place. It also appears to have been an important element of the village’s defensive system. Southwest of the village, near the Vidourle, lies the Moulin de Loriol; a capitelle is located in the Bois de Montjol.

Smaller architectural features also form part of the townscape: Behind number 3 on Rue du 19 mars 1962 is a calade, meaning a paved sloping lane. At the exit from Vic-le-Fesq toward Nîmes, a dry-stone bridge stands on the Grand rue.

History

Vic-le-Fesq has traditional architecture with stone houses that give the town its distinctive character. The first written mention dates from 1106 and refers to the place as “San Johannis de Vico.” Vic and Le Fesq were two independent parishes of the Diocese of Uzès, which were united into a single parish in 1574.

Nature

The Bois du Fesq is designated as a Zone Naturelle d’Intérêt Écologique, Faunistique et Floristique (ZNIEFF). It lies west of Vic-le-Fesq and its château, in the heart of a bend in the Vidourle. The Type 1 ZNIEFF “Rivière du Vidourle entre Sardan et Lecques” also includes Vic-le-Fesq. The Courme flows into the Vidourle at Vic-le-Fesq.

Paths and Views

A hiking trail crossing Vic-le-Fesq belongs to the Plan Départemental des Itinéraires de Promenades et de Randonnée (PDIPR) and is managed by the Communauté de Communes du Piémont Cévenol. Numerous paths cross the Bois du Fesq or run along the Vidourle.

Those arriving in Vic-le-Fesq from Nîmes discover, a few hundred meters after the intersection with the road from Alès to Sommières, a beautiful panorama of the Cévennes crowned by Mont Aigoual.

The Vic-le-Fesq festival committee is holding the fourth edition of its night market on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
