Culture and history

The Ducal Castle, known as “Le Duché”, was built on an ancient castrum, or Roman military camp. Its architecture combines elements from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Age of Enlightenment and the modern era.

The former 17th-century Bishop’s Palace houses the Musée Georges Borias. It presents archaeological, historical and arts-and-crafts collections relating to Uzès’s rich past and to writers associated with the city, including Racine and Gide. The exhibition also includes the pottery of Uzège, with ceramics from Saint-Quentin and products from the Pichon manufactory in Uzès. Guided tours in French, English and Italian are available by prior reservation.

The Jardin Médiéval d’Uzès has been awarded the “Jardin remarquable” designation and is located in a historic prison building overlooked by two 12th-century towers. The botanical garden is laid out in a medieval style and contains around 450 labelled plants. In the garden, after climbing more than 100 steps, the Tour du Roi offers panoramic views of Uzès and its surroundings.

The Tour Fenestrelle was built between the 12th and 13th centuries as the bell tower of Saint-Théodorit Cathedral. Its cylindrical shape is considered unique in France.

A guided tour of the Roman spring of Eure includes the reservoir, which is closed to the public, as well as the first archaeological remains of the Roman aqueduct. From September to June, visitors can explore the Haras national d’Uzès independently with an audio guide during opening hours. Markets and regional produce

The producers’ market held on Wednesdays in Uzès offers seasonal fruit and vegetables, cheese, wine, olive oil and other regional food products from around 60 producers. The Place aux Herbes has been the centre of Uzès’s markets since the 13th century.

Paths and orientation

The signposted circular hiking trail “Sentier de la Vallée de l’Eure – Table d’orientation” is 6.1 kilometres long and rated easy. There is a 3-kilometre shortcut for the same circular trail, which omits the climb to the orientation table.

The guided route to the Roman spring of Eure has an elevation gain of 60 metres and partly follows a path. The “Parcours vert” orienteering course comprises two routes classified as easy: one in the Vallée de l’Eure and one in the Parc du Duché.
