Culture and History

The Chapelle Saint-Pierre-de-Castres stands in isolation on a rocky promontory opposite the Gallo-Roman oppidum Camp de César, which also has a chapel. Its strategic location made it possible to control the ancient route between Nîmes and Alba-la-Romaine. The chapel has a roof made of limestone slabs, a type of construction described as very rare in the Gard.

The Tour de Guet is a medieval seigneurial tower and the only surviving remnant of the Castrum mentioned in 1199. It hosts numerous events and exhibitions.

Notre-Dame de Tresques originated as the former castle chapel. In the 14th century, Notre-Dame was enlarged and fitted with a bell tower in the form of a square tower. From 1870 to 1892, the parish church was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style; the eastern part, which was preserved, was excluded.

The former parish church of Saint-Martin-de-Jussan is now a chapel. Saint-Martin-de-Jussan has always remained a place of pilgrimage.

The Tave is the main river running through Tresques. The circular hiking trail to the Chapelle Saint-Martin de Jussan is 5 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
