Tavel: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The historic part of the Cave coopérative de Tavel was built in 1937. Also in 1937, the Cave coopérative de Tavel was designed by Henri Floutier in the regionalist, Neo-Provençal style. It was listed as a historic monument in 2013. Tavel stone is called “marble of Tavel” because, like marble, it can be polished exceptionally well.

Culture and History

The Fontaine de Tavel was built in 1822. It originally served to supply water, as well as to soak barrels before the grape harvest, wash clothes, and water horses. Today, the Fontaine de Tavel is used as a cultural venue and hosts open-air concerts on summer evenings.

The Quartier des jardins dates back to the French Revolution and comprises 62 irrigated gardens that are still cultivated by Tavel residents.

Winegrowing

The Tavel AOC was introduced in 1936. Château Trinquevedel offers paid vineyard and cellar tours with tastings by prior appointment. The Caves des Vignerons de Tavel et Lirac offer tastings of Tavel, Lirac, Côtes du Rhône, Vin de Pays, and Vin de table. They can accommodate groups; appointments and the organisation of the visit must be arranged in advance.

Trails and Landscape

The Route des vignobles is a 15 km route along which visitors can discover Tavel’s three terroirs. The Sentier des Galets begins at the Cave de Tavel and is a 2.3 km interpretive trail accessible to everyone, without any particular difficulties, that showcases the biodiversity of Tavel’s wine-growing region. Along the Sentier des Galets, six information panels provide details about the grape varieties and terroirs underlying this quality wine-growing region. The “Entre Sables et Lauzes” trail passes stations focusing on heritage, terroir, and grape varieties along the route.

The Nef Solaire consists of five sundials at the A9 rest area between Orange and Nîmes; it can be reached on foot from Tavel.
