Nature and hiking trails
The easy circular hiking trail L’Exil is 13 kilometres long and starts and ends in Saumane. It offers panoramic views of Mont Lozère, the Cévennes and Mont Aigoual. One section follows a former royal road with original retaining walls, aqueducts and kilometre markers.
The Le Soult hiking trail also passes through the municipalities of L’Estréchure, Saumane and Les Plantiers. The Pont des Chèvres hike runs between Saumane and L’Estréchure around the Gardon and its historic floodplain. A public transport stop is located less than 500 metres from the starting point of this hike.
Culture and history
The Sainte Marie de Saumane church, Cella Sancte-Marie de Saumanna, has been recorded in the cartulary of Saint-Victor de Marseille since 1079. The temple of Saumane was built in 1875.
Saumane was severely affected by the conflicts between the Camisards and the royal troops in 1703. During the golden age of silkworm farming in the 18th and 19th centuries, two silk-spinning mills operated in the village.
Village life and events
In summer, the village has an equipped and supervised bathing area. The Foire de Saumane takes place on the last Sunday in July.
