Nature
The 1,288.99-hectare ZNIEFF area 820030146 includes Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols-et-Avéjan. It is protected under the Loi Montagne and classified as a site under the Habitats Directive.
In the area, the predominantly marly subsoil and relatively flat relief create numerous small streams, most of which carry water only temporarily, as well as wet meadows and marshland in some places. The dry grasslands of ZNIEFF area 820030146 are particularly rich in orchids and provide favorable habitats for birds of open landscapes.
Culture and History
The Tour de l’Horloge is a preserved element of the former fortifications of the original village and is dated approximately to the 12th century. In 1741, it acquired its present appearance and was covered with glazed tiles.
The Protestant temple was inaugurated in 1820. A stone communion table made of asphalt rock, originating from the first temple built in 1612, is still used there today.
The Église Saint-Pierre d’Avéjan was built in a particularly pure Romanesque style. A crypt is located beneath the chapel of the Counts of Avéjan; today, the church is used for exhibitions and concerts. The foundations of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste probably date from the 12th century.
The Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols asphalt concession was established in 1859 and was operated by the Société Française des Asphaltes (SFA) from 1872 onward. The Maison des Mines is a restored former residential building for engineers.
The Pont de Caveirac is probably medieval in origin and not Roman, as it is sometimes incorrectly described. It crossed the Claysse near the former Moulin de Caveirac.
The former SMAC mine site is located 1.5 km north of the village. From Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols, it can be reached via the D979 towards Barjac; the rest of the route leads uphill on foot along a tree-lined avenue. A permit from the Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols town hall is required for a visit, and visitors must not approach the buildings.
Paths and Experiences
The Circuit de Beauséjour is a 15-kilometer, easy-rated hiking trail starting in Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols. It passes through the asphalt mines and the hamlet of Avéjan. Swimming is possible at Galinier along the Circuit de Beauséjour.

At the SFA site in Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols-et-Avéjan, Athome Théâtre organizes the “Théâtre sous les Etoiles” every year. For this purpose, it employs around ten cultural professionals on fixed-term contracts and welcomes more than 5,000 spectators.
