Culture and history
The Monument aux morts de la guerre de 1914-1918 at Place du 8 mai is listed as a historic monument. The Fort of Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort was built in 1688 by François Ferry to monitor the Protestants in the Cévennes.
The Protestant temple of the Église protestante unie de France was built between 1820 and 1822 in the neoclassical style. It covers more than 600 m² and has a monumental colonnade, two bell towers and a large organ dating from 1853.
The Tour Saint-Jean at the Porte de Cros is a former defensive structure and was a strategic point in the 17th-century fortifications facing the Cévennes. Château des Graves is classified as a historic monument. The Dugas building contains carved fireplaces and decorations from the 17th century that are protected as historic monuments.
Visits and trails
The Musée de la Soie is located in the former barracks of Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort next to the tourist office. From April to October, it presents silkworm rearing at all stages of the life cycle in a reconstructed silkworm farm and showcases sophisticated machinery and the craftsmanship of silk production.
The Musée de la Soie offers 1.5-hour guided tours led by an educational guide and workshops for school groups, including reeling a cocoon, making a thread and weaving. The programme also includes guided tours, an archival film about silkworm rearing, a discovery area for children and seasonal textile exhibitions featuring works by local craftspeople.
As a complement to a visit to the Musée de la Soie, the municipal trail Sentier des Vestiges de l’Industrie de la Soie begins in the town and leads to numerous remnants and buildings of the silk industry.
