Saint-Gervais: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The La Source de l’Arnave walking loop passes through Saint-Gervais. The moderately difficult route is 9.3 km long, takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes, and is marked with yellow signs and directional signage. The hike follows a route that Carthusian monks once used to travel south towards Bagnols-sur-Cèze and the lower Cèze Valley.

Nature and Trails

The preserved agricultural landscape of Saint-Gervais includes plane trees, cypresses, olive trees, oaks and vineyards. The village is considered a gateway to the Cèze Valley. In addition to the walking loop, there are local walking trails and sports facilities for various leisure activities. The signposted wine tourism trail “Entre vigne et Patrimoine” is 1.5 km long, takes approximately 40 minutes and is considered easy.

History

The historic settlement of Saint-Gervais is grouped around the church and a fortified house dating from the 13th century. A network of lanes lies around the washhouse, connected by archways; fountains adorn these lanes. The washhouse of Saint-Gervais was built between 1862 and 1865.

Culture

The Font-du-Loup oppidum on Haut-Castel Hill is one of the significant sites in the Saint-Gervais area. An inscribed Gallo-Roman stele is mounted above the sarcophagus fragment on the southern wall of the church. Two fragments of a marble sarcophagus are embedded in the southern façade of the church; they were discovered in 1836.

Neolithic remains in the surroundings of Saint-Gervais include the megalith in the Bois de Pigeaud. A Gallic burial in Combe-Belle is among the prehistoric remains in the area. The Saint-Gervais Dolmen No. 1 lies 1.5 km north of the village in the Coste-Rigaude-les-Perrières area. It is located in a municipal forest near the remains of prehistoric enclosures and hut foundations, and stands on a hilltop overlooking the Cèze Valley as well as the feudal castles of Jicon, la Roque and Sabran and the so-called Camp de César.

Wine and Crafts

The Caveau des Vignerons offers private wine tastings and wine-tasting workshops. The Caveau des Vignerons de St Gervais serves AOC wines from the Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages Saint-Gervais appellations during convivial tastings. In the tasting cellar of Domaine Clavel, Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages-Chusclan and Saint-Gervais wines are sold; by appointment, Domaine Clavel also offers wine tastings and cellar tours.

Le S’Armand offers tastings of its wines and tours of its lavender fields. Fleur d’Artisane offers year-round tours of the garden with aromatic and medicinal plants and of the tea field, and organises individual workshops for groups. At Brasserie Etienne, the history of the brewery and the secrets of how La Gervoise beers are made were presented, followed by a tasting with regional products. Since 1924, the winegrowers of Saint-Gervais have combined their professional passion and craftsmanship with the terroir of the municipality.
