The “La mine au bois dormant” hike is a moderately difficult 8.6-kilometre circular route starting in Robiac, Le Buis. It runs for much of its length along the former Rochessadoule–Bessèges railway line and passes through the medieval hamlet of Le Vieux-Buis, known since the 11th century. The hamlet features typical Cévenol architecture.
The “La chapelle Lachamp” hike is a 10.93-kilometre circular route with 560 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 4 hours and 45 minutes. It leads uphill to the chapel, where it offers panoramic views. The circular hike begins and ends at the church car park in Robiac.
History and culture
The Grotte des Chiens in Robiac is considered a prehistoric site dating from before 10,000 to 11,000 BC. The Grotte des Crânes in Robiac is one of the sites dating from before 3,000 to 6,000 BC.
The Les Passeurs de Memoire de Robiac-Rochessadoule association is dedicated on Tuesdays and the first Saturday of each month to preserving the grounds and the Saint-Laurent chapel, a building dating from the 10th to the 12th century. Les Passeurs de Memoire de Robiac-Rochessadoule have restored three old paths and organise weekly walks. Robiac-Rochessadoule is also home to the remains of the 10th-century Benedictine priory of Saint-Laurent. Robiac-Rochessadoule’s mining heritage includes a workshop for making mine lamps.
In Robiac-Rochessadoule, the traditional knowledge of dry-stone restoration has been preserved. The church in Robiac-Rochessadoule displays Romanesque features and stands on foundations dating from the 8th century. Inside the church, visitors can admire the painting “La délivrance de Saint-Pierre” by Xavier Sigalon, which is classified.
