The Maison Carrée de Nîmes has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since September 18, 2023. It is the only and oldest surviving upright example of the Augustan Corinthian order and has preserved all of its decoration intact.

Culture

The Arènes de Nîmes are 133 metres long and 101 metres wide. Their exterior façade is 21 metres high and divided into 60 bays.

Since 1993, the Carré d’Art – Musée d’art contemporain has presented exhibitions every year featuring internationally renowned or emerging artists. The Carré d’Art also offers individual guided tours of the temporary exhibitions and the collection.

The Musée de la Romanité presents 25 centuries of history through several thousand objects and 65 multimedia installations. It is complemented by a Mediterranean archaeological garden that follows the traces of the former Augustan city walls.

The Temple de Diane is a preserved Roman remnant in the Jardins de la Fontaine. In antiquity, it was part of the Augusteum, a complex dedicated to the Roman imperial cult and visited by pilgrims seeking healing.

The Castellum is an extremely rare surviving relic and the endpoint of the Nîmes aqueduct.

Nature

The Jardins de la Fontaine are designated as a Site Patrimonial Remarquable and contain ancient remains as well as emblematic monuments of Nîmes. They offer opportunities for walking, picnicking and cultural sightseeing.

The Tour Magne stands at the highest point of the Jardins de la Fontaine and is the most spectacular surviving remnant of Nîmes’ Roman city fortifications. Its terrace offers visitors a panorama over the city.

City Life

Les Jeudis de Nîmes comprise free evening concerts held in several emblematic squares throughout the city.

The Halles de Nîmes have existed since 1884. They are the vibrant heart of the city centre and continue to be characterised by quality and conviviality.
