The fortress of Montdardier has been documented since the 12th century. Around 1860, Fernand de Ginestous commissioned Viollet-le-Duc to draw up restoration plans; the castle was subsequently completely rebuilt in the medieval style. The stone of Montdardier also reflects the geological foundations of the area: it is a very hard sublithographic limestone that formed between 152 and 164 million years ago.

Landscape and Trails

Montdardier is one of the municipalities affected by the “Causse de Blandas” Natura 2000 site. The Sentier de la Tude is an 8.4-kilometre, moderately difficult hike lasting around 2 hours and 30 minutes. The yellow-marked circular trail starts at the Temple in Montdardier and passes through the Vis state forest to the Tude Rock, which towers above the village and its castle.

The Chemin de Saint Guilhem leads uphill from Le Vigan towards Montdardier and then across the Causse de Blandas.

Activities

The MIRA astronomy club of the Pays Viganais has an open-air observation site in the municipality of Montdardier. On Thursdays, weather permitting, it observes the sky at night and the sun during the day.

The eastern path to the summit of Pic d’Anjeau begins opposite the adventure park with a high ropes course in Montdardier. Graine de Jade offers activities for all age groups, allowing participants to discover, understand and explore the environment. The programme includes hikes, mushroom picking, trips to observe the deer rut, snowshoe tours and puzzle games.
