Culture and History

The Moulin de Corbières in Junas was built in 1482 as a medieval engineering structure. The Corbière washhouse was finally completed in 1906. Rock was quarried in the Carrières du Bon Temps for more than 2,000 years; throughout this period, a manual method remained unchanged from Gallo-Roman times until quarrying ceased in the mid-20th century. The Carrières du Bon Temps are open to visitors free of charge every day all year round.

Exploring the Area

The preserved site of the Vieux Moulin can be discovered on hikes. The Voie Verte from Sommières to Caveirac allows visitors to cycle, ride scooters and walk away from car traffic; the Junas access car park is on Route d’Aujargues near the recycling centre. A geocaching tour in Junas provides an opportunity to explore the municipality while learning about its cultural heritage.

Events

The Jazz à Junas festival takes place in the Carrières de Junas and presents European artists alongside performers from the French scene and new talents. The festival offers workshops for adults and young visitors, free concerts, as well as open opportunities for meeting and learning.

The Rencontres de la Pierre has been organised by the “Des Hommes et des Cailloux” association since 2013, bringing together stonemasons, sculptors, mosaic artists and dry-stone wall builders.
