Culture and History

Several buildings bear witness to the long development of the village. The church of Génolhac was built in the 11th century and acquired its distinctive comb-style bell tower in the 16th century after being partially destroyed during the Wars of Religion. The fortified tower was built in the 12th century on a square plan. It served as an observation point for monitoring incoming transport and collecting tolls on the Régordane Way.

The Temple of Génolhac was originally a Dominican monastery built in 1302. It is connected with the village’s Protestant history and its role as a stronghold of the Camisard resistance. The Jouany Bridge is a medieval aqueduct from the 14th century and forms part of the Régordane Way. The former Génolhac tannery includes a 40-metre-high brick chimney; the factory operated from the second half of the 19th century until 1964.

Landscape and Trails

Four major waterways cross the municipality of Génolhac: the Luech, the Homol, the Amalet and the Gardonnette. Seventeen trails for short hikes are available around Génolhac. These short hikes take three to four hours and can be undertaken as half-day or full-day outings.

Market and Information

Génolhac’s weekly market takes place every Saturday morning at Place du Colombier. Artisans and traders sell local products there, such as vegetables, cured meats, cheese and honey.

The Maison du Tourisme et du Parc national in Génolhac is a joint information centre for the national park and the tourist office. It provides visitors with information about events, discovery trails, museums, sights and excursions. At the beginning of August, the Sentier des Bouzèdes is organised as an 11.7-kilometre mountain race; it connects Génolhac with Mas de la Barque.
