Culture and History

The Le Fort district developed from a defensive wall built in 1367 and retains an approximately square layout, right-angled streets, and architectural elements from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Protestant temple of Congénies was rebuilt in the Vaunage from 1817 to 1818; since 1892, it has housed a bell called “La Concorde”.

The Fontaine de la Bourse is a cast-iron fountain installation created in 1868, whose water was supplied by the Font-vieille spring. It was restored in 2008 as part of the heritage plan of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Sommières. The Puits du Montadou comprises a well more than 9 metres deep and an underground water reservoir 60 metres long and 2 metres high. It was restored in 2021 by a municipal employee.

The La Poste post office building in Congénies is a work by the architect Armand Pellier. La Poste was restored in 2019, preserving its architectural character. The ensemble of the Quaker house and Quaker cemetery is considered unique in France.

Paths and Trails

The Voie Verte de la Vaunage passes through Congénies. In addition, the route of the pre-Romanesque Via luteva can be traced across the entire municipality of Congénies. The remains of the Via luteva pass by the ancient spring of Fontvieille.
