Clarensac preserves a piece of its fortification history with the Tour Gazagne: the tower is still standing and once defended the southern gate, where the entrance to Rue du Four is located today.

Those who choose Clarensac as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.

History and Townscape

The Tour ronde au sud-est is a medieval relic of Clarensac’s former ring of fortifications. In the historic centre is the Porte nord (Soubeiran), a northern gate and, at the same time, a narrow street that leads through the former « château neuf ».

Clarensac was also a stop on the Régordane Route, along which pilgrims travelled to pray at the tomb of Saint Gilles.

The Fontaine du Griffe stands on the village square. It was formerly a public fountain supplied by the Font de Bonnet spring in the garrigue; this information refers to the period from 1819 to 1862. The Tour de l’horloge also stands on the village square; it was built as a watchtower in 1640, partially destroyed and rebuilt in 1857.

Near the centre of Clarensac, on the Chemin de Saint Côme, is the Lavoir, the last of four washhouses built between 1852 and 1862. Another narrow street in the historic centre is the Rue des parapluies fermés. The village cemetery is home to the windmill, the only surviving relic of four mills that existed in the 17th century.

Region and Landscape

The Vaunage is a depression in the Garrigues plateau characterised by vineyards and garrigue landscapes. The Côte de Clarensac is the highest point in the Vaunage and offers views of the coast.

Hiking

The Boucle sur les hauteurs au nord de Clarensac et St-Côme is a circular hike that alternates between DFCI tracks and paths without crossing a road. There are two Capitelles along this circular hike.
