Culture and History

The original chapel of the Ermitage Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Sépulcre dates from the early 12th century. The former chapel of the Ermitage Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Sépulcre – with the exception of the 19th-century section – was listed as a Monument historique by decree of 2 March 1981. At the chapel, the Les Amis du Saint-Sépulcre association organises concerts, guided tours and events during the Journées du Patrimoine.

The Château de la Fare is built onto the medieval town walls of Cavillargues. Its Renaissance façade is decorated with sculptures. The château is privately owned and is open to visitors during the Journées du Patrimoine.

The main façade of the Château Nicolay is flanked by two large round towers. Two historic mullioned windows have been preserved on the second upper floor.

The Dolmen de Peyre Pecoulade was built at the end of the Neolithic period, around 3000 BC. The ruined megalithic monument measures 4 m by 2.60 m. A Roman funerary altar is built into the wall of the Cavillargues presbytery and is visible.

Surrounding Area

The wider region around Cavillargues is home to the ruins of the Abbaye de Valsauve, dating from 1217 to 1375. The historic site of the Abbaye de Valsauve is also located in the vicinity of Cavillargues. The Abbatiale de Goudargues monastery and the historic site of the Chartreuse de Valbonne are likewise nearby.

The wider region also includes the summit of Serre de fons, Mont Bouquet mountain, the summit of Serre Noir and the island of ÃŽle de la Piboulette.
