Canaules-Et-Argentières: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Canaules-et-Argentières lies on the north-eastern slope of the Bay stream, in a small agricultural area surrounded by sunny hills. Mulberry trees, vineyards and olive groves have shaped the local rural landscape since Roman times. From the local hills, the distant ridges of Coutach and the Cévennes partly surround the horizon.

Culture and History

A prominent testament to the local wine-growing history is the Cave coopérative de Canaules, built in 1947. On 14 February 2013, it received the regional heritage label from the Commission Régionale du Patrimoine et des Sites. The Protestant temple stands on the main road and was built in 1861 under the direction of the architect Meynadier. A Gallo-Roman statue is exhibited on the upper floor of the town hall.

Away from the main road, the village is home to a former Languedoc circulade dating from the 11th century. The former castle is part of this historic circulade. Canaules-et-Argentières has also been home to magnaneries and beautiful buildings since the 17th century, extending south and north beyond the historic village centre.

Landscape and Paths

Outlying farmsteads can be reached on foot or by bicycle via small paths and former drailles. Short trips into the low hills offer views of the Languedoc wine-growing landscapes and the village of Canaules. The Voie verte de Quissac à Lézan also passes through Canaules-et-Argentières.

Festivals, Art and Cycling

The traditional Fête votive takes place in the village square during the last week of August and includes bull-related events, a concert and dancing. The Salon des arts de Baylenque has been held for almost 20 years and brings together artists recognised as part of the Art Singulier movement each year. On the second weekend of October, the local photography club organises a photography festival.

For cyclists, the 14 km mountain bike route “La plaine de Bay” runs through Savignargues and Canaules-et-Argentières, between vineyards and cultivated fields.
