The Natura 2000 site “Le Gardon et ses gorges”, also known as “Gorges du Gardon”, covers 759 hectares in Cabrières, corresponding to 51.4 % of the municipality’s area. 284 hectares of Cabrières’ municipal forest also belong to this Natura 2000 site.
Cabrières also lies within the area “Gorges du Gardon, Pont du Gard and garrigues nîmoises”, which was classified as a remarkable landscape by decree in 2013. It extends across 11 municipalities and covers 7,760 hectares. In the garrigue, the newly built dry-stone lavogne creates a wetland for amphibians and dragonflies.
History and culture
The village church of Cabrières was built in 1609. The Château du cardinal de Cabrières is one of the most important testimonies to the village’s Christian history. Fragments of vases and pottery found across the Cabrières area also attest to the presence of Roman civilisation.
