Culture

Construction work on Notre-Dame de Bessèges began in 1864 and was completed in 1868. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Sainte-Barbe and Saint-Eloi. Its gable bears the inscription “Liberté-Egalité-Fraternité, République Française”. The gallery houses an organ created in 1876, which was listed as a movable monument historique on 5 September 1991.

History

The Mas de la Cantonade is considered to be probably the oldest dwelling in Bessèges. The disaster at the Mines de Lalle occurred in 1861. The first Corso in Bessèges took place in 1905.

Experiences

The MI.A.O.U. in the Cévennes can be explored independently throughout the year via the streets and paths of Bessèges.

The Parcours d'interprétation de la mine de Bessèges is 2.5 km long and provides insights into the lives of the miners, their tools and the most important phases of mining. Ten information boards line the route. Day and weekly fishing permits are sold at the Bessèges tourist information office.

From May to September, the Maison Perséphone hosts “Dimanches au jardin” once a month, featuring performances, shared meals, exhibitions and concerts. The Maison Perséphone also offers workshops on artistic practices.

Events

The Bessèges Corso festival takes place on the first weekend of September. Associations make the floats for the Bessèges Corso.
