Culture and History

The Église Saint-Martin has been listed as a historic monument since 1984. It has been documented since 1119 and was probably rebuilt at the end of the 17th century following the Wars of Religion. It also preserves a particularly interesting example of the survival of opus monspelliensis into the 18th century.

The Château d’Aujargues dates back to the Middle Ages and is partially listed as a historic monument. The arcaded dovecote of the Château d’Aujargues is listed as a historic monument and can be seen from a hiking trail. The Le Bois de Clapisse route passes an arcaded dovecote from the 17th century belonging to the château. The 19th-century Temple is part of Aujargues’ architectural heritage.

Paths and Routes

The Balade sur le terroir de l’AOP Languedoc-Sommières is a marked circular hike 7.3 kilometres long that starts and ends in Aujargues. It passes through the appellation’s wine-growing area and the garrigue. An audio guide for smartphones is available for the walk.

La Rascasse is a 5.0-kilometre marked circular hike, marked in yellow, starting at Aujargues town hall. The walk includes a covered 19th-century washhouse with three basins and passes an old bridge connected to the village priest’s path between the presbytery and the garden. La Rascasse is also a small water reservoir on the Font Gaillarde stream.

Le chemin des oliviers is a marked circular hike 16.6 kilometres long that starts and ends in Aujargues. The Les Olivettes cycling loop passes beneath the Château d’Aujargues and then continues into the village. Beyond Aujargues, the cycling route passes through vineyards and olive groves lined with dry-stone walls.

Events

Cultural and festive events take place regularly in Aujargues, including the Fête votive. The Fête votive d’Aujargues is a village festival celebrating Camargue traditions. The programme includes Abrivados, Bandidos, dances and other events.
