Argilliers: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

In Argilliers, sacred architectural history and Roman hydraulic engineering come together. Construction of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption d’Argilliers began following the episcopal authorisation of 2 September 1867; on 17 October 1869, the church was consecrated by Bishop Plantier, the Bishop of Nîmes. It was designed in the Romanesque style. Between Saint-Maximin and Argilliers lies the Pont de Bornègre, a Roman aqueduct bridge belonging to the Aqueduct of Nîmes, which spans the Bornègre stream. The bridge is 20 to 25 metres long and consists of three arches; at this location, only the central arch of the former aqueduct has been excavated.

History

The Château de Castille was initially built as a fortified bastide in the 14th century to counter the threats posed by roaming mercenaries. The Château de Castille and its surroundings, including the park, grounds and cemetery, were decorated with around fifty columns. The large elliptical colonnade was completed in 1805. The Château de Castille and its park are not open to the public. However, visitors can walk around the park and see the Chapelle Saint-Louis and a pavilion with columns from the road.

Culture

The Fabriques du Baron de Castille complex is listed as a historic monument. The restored monuments in the complex have been opened to the public for visits. The three monuments to be restored include the Tombeau du Baron, the Tombeau de la Princesse de Rohan and the Mémorial d'Edouard.

Nature

Argilliers lies at the foot of garrigue-covered hills. The Chemin Urbain V passes through Argilliers and was formerly under the supervision of the Baron de Castille. From the Bordènegue junction, it follows a 1.5-kilometre route through vineyards and garrigue to Argilliers, continuing to the church and the “Argilliers” signpost at the Boisset junction.

The discovery trail to the Aqueduct of Nîmes between Bornègre and Vers-Pont-du-Gard follows the course of the aqueduct near Argilliers. It is completely underground there, leads to the road to Uzès, runs alongside it and finally crosses it at the level of the Argilliers cemetery.

Wine

During a wine tasting at Domaine Tardieu Ferrand, visitors can see the glazed barrel cellar in the centre of the sales room and directly into the cellar. Domaine Tardieu Ferrand offers free visits and guided tours.
