Alès reveals its history at notable sites. Fort Vauban was built in 1688 according to the plans of the engineer Vauban and served as a prison for Protestants. The Mine Témoin d’Alès has 700 metres of tunnels, described as France’s largest naturally accessible tunnel network. A continuously guided tour of the mine presents the history of mining from 1880 to the present day. The site is a mining school founded in 1945 that served to train mining apprentices.
Culture
The Musée Pierre André Benoit presents an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art. It also houses 450 books created by PAB that combine poetry and painting; this collection is described as unique in France. The Musée du Colombier complements the cultural offering with an archaeological collection whose finds range from the Middle Paleolithic through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age.

The Parc Méditerranéen de Conilhères is a 2.2-hectare park managed ecologically to promote biodiversity in the city. It includes an olive grove, Mediterranean plantings, an orchard, a woodland area, insect habitats and nesting boxes for birds.
Since April 2007, the Parc Floral Les Camellias de la Prairie has been classified as a recognised collection in the French National Conservatory for Specialised Plant Collections.
Hiking
Alès lies on the long-distance hiking trail Chemin de Stevenson (GR 70), which leads from Le Puy-en-Velay via Saint-Jean-du-Gard to Alès.
