Villegailhenc: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Villegailhenc, the Ancienne église is the oldest building in the village: a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. In 1808, it was extended and restored; its Gothic section dates from this period. In times of war, the Ancienne église served as a citadel and place of refuge.

Culture

The new Notre-Dame church is unusually oriented towards the west. The fort formed part of an old village fortification with defensive walls, towers and moats. The cemetery chapel and cemetery, built in 1782–1783, are also part of the village’s history.

Nature

The ZNIEFF Garrigues de Vallouvière includes Villegailhenc as well as hills and small plateaus with oak forests, garrigue vegetation and more or less open grassland. Protected plants grow in the dry grasslands of this area, including the Ophrys de Catalogne orchid.

In clear weather, the route across the Plateau de la Bade offers views of Carcassonne and its Cité, as well as the Corbières and the Pyrenean mountain range in the background. Along the way, dry-stone walls can be seen that once marked the boundaries of cultivated plots.

Getting Around

A new Voie Verte connects Villegailhenc directly with the Canal du Midi via Villemoustaussou. Along the literary promenade, QR codes allow visitors to listen to readings recorded by local schoolchildren.

The D118 between Carcassonne and Mazamet runs through Villegailhenc; it was adapted to improve safety. The pavements in the village were specifically designed to be accessible to everyone.
