Salsigne: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Gold was discovered in the ores of Salsigne in 1892 by Marius Esparseil. Anyone considering Salsigne as a place to stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.
History
The Salsigne mining site was finally closed in December 2004. The ruins of the Saint-Julien-Sainte-Basilisse chapel are still visible in Salsigne.
The Salsigne Villanière Mines et Mémoire association created the Espace de la Mine. The Mémorial des mineurs de Salsigne conveys the everyday life of the miners and the mining ecosystem in the Montagne Noire. The memorial is free and accessible at all times for everyone. The Salsigne Villanière Mines et Mémoire association also organises a ceremony and a meal for Sainte-Barbe.
Landscape
Salsigne features vineyard and garrigue landscapes; in clear weather, there are views of the Pyrenean peaks.
In the vicinity of Salsigne lies the ZNIEFF “Garrigues de Vallouvière”, with hills, small plateaus, oak forests, garrigue and more or less open grassland.
Activities
Salsigne and the Montagne Noire can be explored on foot, on horseback, by mountain bike or by motorbike. The local AVNIRS association lists walks and hikes followed by a meal as one of its activities.

Salsigne can be reached via the D111 from Conques/Orbiel or Villardonnel, via the D73 from Cuxac-Cabardès, via the D411 from Villanière or via the D118 through Villegailhenc.
