Saissac: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Château de Saissac preserves fortifications on the edge of the Vernassonne Gorge; the ruins of its keep still rise approximately 20 metres high.

The Porte d’Autan, also known as the Porte de Montolieu, is part of the town’s history. It is decorated with three coats of arms attributed to the l’Isle Jourdain and Thurey families and the municipality of Saissac, and marked with the years 1340, 1234 and 1303.

The Maison Soldano dates from the second half of the 13th century and is considered a rare example of civil architecture from this century in the Aude département. In two restored rooms of the Château de Saissac, a museum display of the Saissac coin hoard, containing 2,000 deniers from the 13th century, is also presented.

The Abbaye de Villelongue is a historic site in the immediate vicinity of Saissac. The Abbaye Saint-Pierre à Montolieu, also considered a historic site, is likewise nearby. In the wider regional surroundings of Saissac is the Château d’Aiguefonde, a castle. The Abbaye Royale de la Rode is another historic site there.

The “Entre Château et Rigole” hike in Saissac is 18 kilometres long, takes 5 hours and 30 minutes, has an elevation gain of 350 metres and is rated difficult. The Rigole de la Montagne can be explored from the Lampy Neuf dam in Saissac on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

The Tertre de Co de David is a summit in the vicinity of Saissac. Pic de Montaud is a mountain in the vicinity of Saissac. Le Poumaïrol is a summit in the wider regional surroundings of Saissac, as is the Plateau du Sambrès.

The site of the Lampy reservoir was selected by an expert commission in 1776; the structure was completed in 1782.
