Saint-Martin-Lalande is situated on a hill above the Fresquel Valley. The village was founded at the beginning of the 12th century. Renting a holiday apartment in Saint-Martin-Lalande is one possible accommodation option.
History and Culture
The Castrum Sancti Martini de Landa was protected by fortification walls in the 12th century. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Saint-Martin-Lalande was an important centre of Catharism. In September 1211, a major battle took place below the village on the Fresquel.
The village church houses a 16th-century Pietà classified as a cultural heritage item. Notre-Dame de Bassens comprises a chapel, a replica of the Lourdes grotto and a spring. A pilgrimage with Mass, a procession and veneration of the Black Madonna is scheduled there for Whit Monday; changes are possible.
Landscape and Trails
The hiking loop initiated by Saint-Martin-Lalande and Saint-Papoul, “Panoramas et Patrimoine”, is 10 km long and takes around two and a half hours. Regularly placed yellow markings indicate the route. The loop offers views over the Lauragais audois plain; Saint-Martin-Lalande and its church tower can be seen in the hilly landscape.
The red-and-white-marked GR7 provides an out-and-back route to Saint-Martin-Lalande and can be continued as far as the Canal du Midi. La Crinière d'Or offers numerous excursion opportunities for adults and children.
Water and Fishing
At Lac de la Bretonne, catch-and-release is compulsory when fishing for carp. The Association de pêche de Saint-Martin-Lalande brings beginners and experienced anglers together there for trout fishing.
Mill and Regional Products
Using a stone mill and traditional methods, the Moulin du Vivier produces flour from grain supplied by farmers from the region. The mill shop sells local flour and various regional products directly.
