Coast and Nature

Port-La-Nouvelle combines different coastal landscapes: the urban Front de Mer beach stretches for 1 kilometre. Tiralos and low-barrier access points for people with reduced mobility are available there in several locations. In the south of the municipality lies Les Montilles beach, which stretches for 3.5 kilometres. The wild Vieille-Nouvelle beach is suitable for swimming, water sports and walking. La Vieille Nouvelle beach, which has been converted into a pedestrian zone, has a car park with 150 spaces, including longer spaces for cars with trailers used for kitesurfing.

Located within the municipality of Port-La-Nouvelle, the Réserve naturelle régionale de Sainte-Lucie is protected by the Conservatoire du littoral. On Sainte-Lucie Island, a walking trail leads through pine forests and garrigue to viewpoints overlooking the Canal de la Robine and the Bages-Sigean and Ayrolle lagoons.

Renting a holiday apartment in Port-La-Nouvelle can form part of your personal travel planning for this coastal town.

Activities

The towpath of the Canal de la Robine between Port-La-Nouvelle and Narbonne has been converted into a cycle path. Guided nature excursions by bicycle or mountain bike are offered around Port-La-Nouvelle, for example along the Canal de la Robine; they last half a day or a full day. The family hike lasts approximately three hours and covers around 8 to 10 kilometres.

Culture and History

The Pôle Culturel presents exhibitions throughout the year. The Mardis Cinéma offer a monthly film programme in the original language at the Théâtre de la Mer. At the Cafés littéraires, library staff and invited guests encourage discussions about books. Partir en Livre offers readings, workshops and meetings focused on children's and young people's literature every summer. The La Nouvelle Photographie festival is dedicated to contemporary photography.

The former Tramway des Corbières once connected villages in the Aude and transported passengers and goods. The former Sainte-Lucie saltworks included basins, dykes and canals used for salt production; a small community of salt workers once lived at the saltworks. Some preserved railway stations and commemorative plaques of the Tramway des Corbières still bear witness to this shared memory today.

Local Traditions

During the pêche à la traîne, a fisherman explains how this fishing method works on the beach using a replica of the net. The catch is raffled among the participants, followed by a sardinade.
