The Canal du Midi forms the western and northern boundary of the municipality of Ouveillan and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Culture and History

The former Cistercian grange of Fontcalvy was one of the Cistercian granges belonging to Fontfroide Abbey and has been classified as a historic monument since 9 December 1983. The ground-floor hall is covered by four rib vaults resting on a central clustered column.

Saint-Jean is a Romanesque church from the 12th century with a three-apsed chevet and has been listed as a historic monument since 17 February 1926. Its archivolts are framed by bands of black lava; a lava cross is located above the portal. The Ouveillan war memorial to those who fell in the First World War is also listed as a historic monument.

Nature and Trails

At the southern edge of Ouveillan, the ZNIEFF Etang d'Ouveillan covers around 205.3 hectares around a drained pond. European bee-eaters breed in this area.

The loop Ouveillan: autour de l'étang is a family-friendly circular route around the village of Ouveillan and the salt lake.

Wine and Visits

The Lalaurie family has been at the helm of a 54-hectare vineyard for ten generations. Domaine de Lalaurie offers a guided, entertaining wine tasting covering aromas, flavour notes and wine vocabulary. The guided visit to Domaine de Lalaurie lasts one hour and is intended for groups of two to twelve people.
